After viewing the Academic Integrity Tutorial one of the things that inspired me the most was the number of ways that students or anyone can avoid plagiarism. The thing that surprised me was that you can also be plagiarize with mostly anything like music, videos, pictures, etc... but most of these strategies i was familiar with already. Also I found it interesting how we could easily recognize if someone is doing it or not by the way the person writes it.
Well, after looking the the Academic Integrity Tutor, the two things that inspired me to think differently about academic integrity is the fact that people choose to make poor choices because they don't have the necessary skills or understand how to paraphrase, quote or give credit to any sources and information. The second thing is just how serious it could actually be. Before, i always thought that the teachers only want you to quote or cite because they want proof that you did your work but its actually to give credit for the source. the authors work hard to write it so they should be given credit. I also agree with what Juan said, I was also greatly surprise to found out there are so many things that could be plagiarize. well the fact that teachers or someone can recognize if someone is plagiarize the work is not surprising to me because a while ago, my friend and i was proofreading this essay for a friend and we realize that some of the work was plagiarize because the text contains absolutely no grammer or any mistakes and it sounds very familiar. I'm already familiar with most of the strategies to avoid plagiarizing.
After viewing the Academic Integrity Tutorial, I not only learned all ways that are considered plagierism, but I learned ways to avoid committing plagiarism. There are many ways that one can be at fault without knowing. For example, I have learned in communication class that if a student does not say aloud where particular information in ones speech is from, that is considered plagiarism. What I found interesting and almost wierd, was that teachers who suspect a student is plagiarizing can actually insert phrases from a students work into a website and see if the information was duplicated. Most of the information I read I knew about, but not in such great detail as the website provided.
After reading the tutorial and completing the quiz that followed, I found the number of ways that people can be caught cheating and plagarizing to be extremely high. I was aware of some of the obvious forms of cheating, but reading the link makes me really aware of what is needed to be done everytime research is used to write something. Citing someone's work is a major deal, even if you are only using a small piece of it. It is important to have integreity and to be honest with yourself when you are completing work. This made me look at integrity in a whole new way, because you really are gaining nothing if the work does not come from you. We are in school to become more intelligent human beings so we can be ready for what the real world has to offer. It is not going to help if we use other people's knowledge to help us skate by, because they will not be there to help us once we have jobs. So all in all I have learned today that avoiding plagarism will help us all in the short and long run.
After viewing academic integrity tutorial the first thing that caught my attention was that the thing about parapharsing, even though you rephrase someone's words you still have to give them credit for using their work. The other thing that made me think differently about academic integrity is the punishment a student can get for for not citing his or her's work. Somethings on academic integrity tutorial I did not know about, but now I know that if you use someone's else's work that is not yours you need to give them credit for using their work.
This module really made me realize the importance of Academic Integrity. Before viewing the module, I always had the sense that plagiarizing was a black and white type of thing. For example, copying someone else's essay word for word was obviously cheating. This module showed me that cheating is far more complex and it can be as simple as using someone else's idea. Just like what everyone else so far has said, cheating is very hard to get away with. There are a lot of counter measures to prevent cheating. The punishment and consequences relating to cheating are very severe. In conclusion, I found that Academic Integrity was really just a way to give respect to other authors and to give respect to yourself for your work.
When I looked through The Academic Intergirty I was very interested to learn about it. I already knew a lot about plagarism, but what I didn't know was that the teachers have so many ways to find out if the work is copied or not. I always knew that google or other search engien could search for it, but I didn't know that other things like turn it in can do it. That is super cool and it is a easy way for teachers to catch students cheating. Another thing is while doing the case study. I really enjoyed it as find it very easy. All the students have to do is add page number and author name and the student is set to go. I don't think is thats hard. So these two things got my attention.
After I read the Tutorial I realized that there are a lot of really easy ways for teachers to catch plagiarism. The easiest ways probably just having them submit their work through turnitin.com because of the way it is processed. A few of my teachers have done it in the past and I think it was a good idea because they do not have to go through the trouble of worrying about plagiarism. Another thing that I was informed about was how many different types of cheating there are. I never really realized it until I read the paragraph under the section "What About Other Forms of Cheating?".
After viewing The Academic Integrity Tutorial I found a few things that were quite interesting. One of them was how easy it is for teachers and professors to prove that one is guilty of plagiarism. The easiest way that I haven't really had to do is if the professor has you submit your work on turnitin.com which is a website that compares your work with other public websites to see if you copied anywhere. There are also a few forms of cheating which I had no idea of like impersonation. It's quite obvious that one cannot have another student take an exam in his/her place. But what I didn't know was that one cannot even have another student go to class in his/her place either.
After viewing The Academic Integrity Tutorial I learned what is Plagiarism and how It can be avoided. Students have to be very careful with remembering to cite work ad keep track from where they got information from. I also found out that if a person Plagiarizes there are very strict consequences that, that student will have to deal with.
After taking a look at the academic honesty tutor, the two points that stuck out to me the most were: how easy it is to recognize or identify an individual who was plagiarizing, and also that plagiarizing is more than just copying and pasting someone else’s work into your work. I always knew that if you plagiarize, the writing styles will very, because, it is two different authors, however, I never really thought about it all that much. And as for the just copying, it can go down as far as if you take another person’s idea to work off of.
When i went through this tutorial on the subject of plagiarism, I realized that it in fact is a very big problem, but what made me reflect on what I learned was the fact that plagiarism carries heavy consequences. in the end, it is not at all worth it. Another point that felt highlighted to me was the fact that plagiarism is so easy to detect. it is obvious that a college student's writing is different from a professor at U.C Berkley. so when a teacher is familiar with your style and level of writing, of course they will notice when you are typing words that you can not even pronounce.
After reading the Academic Integrity Tutorial, I became more familiar with the subject of Plagiarism. The two points that were quite surprising were no matter how you paraphrase something, it's still plagiarizing and that you can basically plagiarize anything. I realized that there are many different ways to detect Plagiarism. I learned how to spot when someone is plagiarizing and how to avoid it. I also learned that you have to be careful when citing someone's work or else it will end up being plagiarized.
Although I was aware of tunritin.com prior to reading the Academic Integrity Tutorial, I was completely unaware that plagiarism-or copy-detection softwares (such as Copyfind & Glatt Plagiarism Screening Program) existed. The fact that so many different plagiarism detection services have been created/developed really opened my eyes to what a pressing issue plagiarism has become.
During my Communications class, I became familiar with a skill that can utilized in order to avoid plagiarism - acknowledging and citing ALL of my sources (pictures, graphs, ideas, facts, etc.) This brought to my attention that although you may not be copying text directly from another source, paraphrasing or even simply copying an image without citation is considered plagiarism. For this reason, I am always cautious when I obtain information from outside sources.
By: Karen Ortiz After viewing the Academic Integrity Tutorial I learned that plagarizing screening is everywhere and that is has become a big issue that brings heavy consequences. I learned the importance of citing sources and citing them properly. What also stood out to me were all the different types of cheating and how easy it is for professors to know when something is plagirized. Overall, I think knowing how to cite sources properly is very important because you want to make sure you do your own work and aviod getting into serious problems.
After observing the Academic Integrity Tutorial i soon found out that Plagarizing screening can be found every where. All types of software and programs are used to detect such lawful acts. in addition if tyour professors know your style of writting they will easly know that something is wrong when you plagarized due to he new writting style. You can plagarized in any way too. By music, in writting of coursem with out citing your sources properly: MLA, APA and others.
one of the two things that inspired me about academic integrity was that there are two form that can help a person from making a mistake that could be avoided very easily. the two ways that can help are by using the MLA format and the APA formats.both will help by allowing the user to cite their work when it is needed in the right places and correct way.
the second thing the inspired me was that even if a person with a group of friends came up with ideas , it is still necessary to cite where the idea came from because it was not only yours but also the friend's idea at the same time. this has tought me that if your in doubt cite it out.
After viewing the Academic Integrity Tutorial, the module inspired me to think about plagerism on a more heavy note. Before coming to CSUEB I was well aware of plagerism but I wasn't aware about the importance of it. Not only did I realize how it can affect one in a short term spand, its also affects one in the long run by shifting characteristics and hurting a person's ability to learn.
I've noticed that in college plagerism is something people can get expelled for so thus knowing how serious the issue is. I could say that I've never done it and I dont plan to.
Watching the Academic Integrity tutorial made me realize a few new things. The first one is that plagerizing can be anything from copying directly to using the same words or ideas of somebody else without giving them credit for their creativity. The other thing is that plagerism does not necessarily have to be from writing, it can also be music or any other type of art or invention. Another intresting fact about plagerism is that it can be identifyed with software such as Turn-it-in. Turn-it-in.com is a website that helps instructors identify plagerized text. I have become familiar with his website because my english teacher requires us to use it in order to improve our essays by citing correctly. The consequences of plagerism are so BIG that its always good to double check your work and make sure that you are citing eveything correctly.
After viewing the Academic Integrity Tutorial, one of what I was inspired is that Music, drawings, designs, dance, photography and other artistic or technical work created by someone else are included as the Plagiarism. I have thought plagiarism is only for book or articles like that, so this is surprising for me. At the same time, I reconsider about it, so from now on, In order to avoid plagiarism, I must try to acknowledge the original source of those materials. The other thing and the most thing that inspired me is that how important the plagiarism is. In my high school in Japan, I've never cared of it and I've just copied what I wanted to use. However through this module, I acknowledge it is a serious problem and I surely do not do it although I've never done it in CSUEB so far.
After viewing the Academic Integrity Tutorial, It all made sense to me about plagiarism because I was taught how and why plagiarism can play a major role on research assignments, writing a paper or doing a project using another resource without citing the work in your project and plagiarism can be anything from copying from word to word and using another person's resource and examples in to your own project without citing the work.
After viewing the Academic Integrity Tutorial I have found two main points on the topic on plagiarism. First I noticed how easy it was to plagrise without meaning to. I never knew before the tutorial that you needed to give credit for another person's idea; I just thought you had to give credit for exact words. This inspires me to found out even more about plagiarism so that I wont do it. Another I learned was the extreme consequenses for doing plagiarism. Getting expulsed from college or even getting my degree withhold or rescinded is just not worth the risk of plagiarising. Even through I never thought of plagiarising personaly, I never knew that the consequenses were so harsh. So, this makes me realize that plagiarism is not worth it and is only hurting me.
After viewing the tutorial, its very similar to the disscussions i've had in the past in my other classes. I really do think that plaigerism is very crucial to think about before doing. Once plaigerized it can hurt your future as well as others. Being kicked out of school and having it be on your record is very embarressing as well as a learned lesson. It is not so great to loose your education over a piece of paper that was not cited so be careful.
Great set of comments! Here are key points, from my perspective:
"people choose to make poor choices because they don't have the necessary skills or understand how to paraphrase, quote or give credit to any sources and information" Poor choices in any walk of life are often a results of a lack of understanding.
"even though you rephrase someone's words you still have to give them credit for using their work" Paraphrasing is a key issue. You will learn how to paraphrase and how to improve your paraphrasing skills in many of your classes here, regardless of the subject. Paraphrasing is an important skill, even as you also cite what you paraphrase.
"I found that Academic Integrity was really just a way to give respect to other authors and to give respect to yourself for your work." Yes, this topic is very much a question of respect for others and for yourself. Behaving honorably is important.
"I don't think is thats hard." Citation isn't that hard, once you've practiced it. You will find it gets easier as you do it more.
"What About Other Forms of Cheating"? A number of you noted how many forms of cheating exist and also the importance of citing sources for more than just text--images, sound, etc.
"if your in doubt cite it out." Good advice!
"you really are gaining nothing if the work does not come from you." Exactly! This is YOUR learning process. Wonderful!

I didn't know there was a website which you can check if your paper was copied off of other peoples work. I believe that website is called turnitin.com.
