Question on Unit 1

At this point, you have explored a couple of different search engines and learned to search them in some new ways.

1. what advantages and disadvantages have you discovered?
2. how might this unit change the way you interact with search engines in the future?

26 comments:

  1. 1. I have discovered the advantages of refining your search by using Boolean operators as well as by refining your search terms. However, although your search may return several relevant results, it is quite possible that these results may not have come from a credible source. For this reason, it is always important to analyze the credibility of the source as well as look into other sources of information.

    2. Although I was already familiar with search engines, after completing unit 1, I have become quite interested in using Delicious. I think it is a convenient web browsing tool that will allow me to save and manage different web sites as well as access them from any location if I need so so in the future (Thank you for pointing this out Ms. Soules)

  2. Boolean Operators and substituting words really makes using search engines very efficient. You are able to get more relevant hits from search engines. Boolean operators, however, must be used carefully. If used improperly, they can hide results which limits your available resource.

2.This unit will change the way I approach search engines. I will think of search engines as a gumball machine that will only accept quarters. In other words I will have to convert all my questions and ideas into specific terms that the search engine will accept.

  3. Since I have been able to learn different ways of searching the web throught a variety of search engines, I have come to conclusion that there are many advantages for me since I have learned these. The advantage of being able to us and Boolean operators, and search my terms in a number of different ways gives me the advantage of a variety of results and information. Now that I recieve more results, I now run into the disadvantage of recieving information that can be uncredible and not as useful as I might want it to be.

I think at the end of this unit, I will be more knowledgeable in ways that others are not when it comes to the web. For example, being able to recognize credible information from bogus websites, refining search terms, and being able to find information faster and easier. Even though I am familiar with search engines now, I will become some what of an expert in how to use search engines more efficently.

  4. 1. what advantages and disadvantages have you discovered?
The adavantages I have learned is that I have a wider selection of different search engines to provide me with more choices for my future researches, although the adavantage is that it may take a little longer the results are more promising.

    2. how might this unit change the way you interact with search engines in the future?
In the future just in case Im not able to find what im looking for at one search engine I can try another while using the blooean operator method to narrow and define my search.

  5. 1. The advantages that i have discovered is that with Boolean's operators i could get more choices to pick from when Im doing my research and i could see the diferent results each search engine gives me with the same terms. Some disadvantages were that sometimes it could get confusing on the terms you choose because then you are not going to know what you were searching for.

2.After this unit, i learned that there are many strategies to use when searching for a particular topic or when we ask a question and it will really help me in the future.

  6. 1. I have learned that many search engines are more specific then others, some also have more advertisement then others, and if you are looking for a simple answer with very little advertisement then google is your best bet.

    2. I will use the Boolean operators to my advantage, so i could get a better and efficient answer to my search in any web site.

  7. 1.What advantages and disadvantages have you discovered?
Ans: I have learned that all the search engines aren't the same. Some of them are better then other. I've also learned that using words in the search engines makes a lot of difference. I've learned how to narrow down my search and that really help. There not so many disadvantage just that some search engine gives way to many information that is not asked for.

2.How might this unit change the way you interact with search engines in the future?
Ans: I've learned how to narrow my search and now when I search for something online it is easier for me to do so. I know which search engine is better and the right way to search something online.

  8. Interesting comments. Here are some thoughts on your comments:

    1. Being careful with Booleans is a good idea. AND and OR work fairly easily, which is why I had you do an AND/OR comparison early on. I wanted you to see for yourselves the difference in numbers of results. That cements the principle in your mind. NOT, however, is where you really have to be careful. If you ask for cats AND dogs NOT horses (however you have to structure the search, depending on the search engine you're using), you will get no results for those sites that have horses, even if cats and dogs are present on the site. NOT is very powerful, very useful, too, but very powerful.

    2. I very much like the gumball machine idea. You have to use quarters, dimes or fifty-cent pieces won't do. On the other hand, there are different kinds of quarters and those you have to examine, because some search engines will take one kind of quarter (say from Georgia), but other search engines will require another (say from California). It's all about knowing what a particular search engine requires and structuring your search accordingly--not always easy. It requires some hunting around to find the instructions in the help menus for each search engine.

    3. Someone mentioned trying different search engines if you can't find what you're looking for in one search engine. That's a good idea, I think, but only after you try variations on your search strategy in your first search engine. Often, the information is there and you want to make sure you have exhausted all your possibilities in one search engine before you go off to another; otherwise, you may find the same issue in the next search engine and the next.

    4. Someone mentioned that structuring search strings can be confusing at times. That's true. As you learn more about structuring search strings, it gets complicated. Somewhere along the line, it becomes clear that what you are really doing is structuring an algebraic statement, only with words. You remember algebra? Where one action must be performed before another, and so on. That's what your search strings are also doing. You're just using AND instead of a plus sign or quotation marks instead of parentheses, and so on, although I believe you can use parentheses, too, but that's not something I've tested at this point.

    5. Someone mentioned Google as being more ad-free. Frankly, I doubt that over the long haul. If any search engine has fewer ads, it's likely to be one of the ones you don't know, like Exalead or Gigablast. Yahoo, Google, even ask.com are just that--commercial sites that survive on ad revenue. They will sell all the ad space they can sell.

    6. As for some search engines being better than others, that depends. You may find one search engine better for some questions than others, but that's a different thing from a blanket statement that some search engines are better than others. I don't know. There is the comfort of familiarity and if you are familiar with google, for example, you may find it "better" as a result. Also, once you get used to the particular ways of a particular search engine, it may be easier to stick with one rather than try to learn the conventions of a number of search engines and also which conventions go with which search engine.

The purpose of this unit was to provide you with some concepts that will be used in other sources and to show you that there can be more to search engines than just putting in words and getting a bunch of results.

At least for those who have commented on this question so far, I think that objective has been achieved and even if you go back to your quick ways of searching via search engines, you will know that there is a level of complexity of which you were previously unaware.

  9. I have discovered that Boolean Operators have to be used appropriately because if you do not use them in the UPPER CASE they do not work. I have also learned that some search engines give more results than others, so I will probably use some more often than others.

In the future this will help me because I will know to try more than one search engine, and have a lot more results to search through. Also, I will be able to easily refine my searches.

  10. 1. I didn't know that Boolean Operators had to be used in UPPER CASE and the function didn't work. So I searched the internet, using different engines and Boolean operators and I found that using OR broadened my search results and using AND narrowed my results. It was definitely advantageous for me. A disadvantage would be whether or not the website is accurate or authoritative.

    2. This unit will change the way I use search engines probably forever because now I know a couple ways to make my searches more effective. I now also know more of how to make sure the site I am on is the most useful out of all of them by evaluation.

  11. 1. Some advantages are that they will search for many websites to help you get the information you need. Some disadvantages are that you must know how to properly use the search engines. For example, OR is more AND is less technique, as well as identifying legitimate websites.
    2. Now I learned how to use/interact with my searches more efficiently and usefully. Also, how to identify legitimate websites vy the date, anout us, and more. I was also very amazed by the Delicious tool because it seems VERY helpful for things such as a research paper.

  13. 1. what advantages and disadvantages have you discovered?

A, An advantage is that I could learn the way to use Boolean Operators. Before learning it, I have searched my topic with full sentence like "How can I do for global warming?" It was good way to find exactly same information, but sometimes that way does not work. However, I learned Boolean Operators this time, so I think that searching will be easier.
I cannot come up with any disadvantages.

    2. how might this unit change the way you interact with search engines in the future?

A, It will be helpful to find exact information faster. Before, I always spend much time on searching, so I think so.

  14. The main advantage I learned is to use key words when searching for something. I use to think it was better to type out a whole question or sentence to get the best results. From now on I will only be using key words when looking something up. Another useful thing I will use is the difference between AND and OR and how I can search two totally different things that don't relate at once just by using OR.

  16. 1. I found that BOOLEAN Operators works really well. I found out that it can be very helpful and useful if used right. The disadvantage is if it is not used right people will being missing out on useful information.

    2. I will not only be able to find my information a lot faster I will be searching for results in a better way and in return getting more efficient results.

  17. 1. I have learned the advantages of using correct terms in search engines. Using the Boolean Operators and and or can really make a difference in the amount of results found on the web. I could easily broaden or narrow my search with the use of two small words. It made researching a lot faster and useful for me. The nesting technique really helped me in honing in my searches. I learned a couple more search engines that I will be using in the future. I was so used to using Google, that I did not know how other search engines were better at narrowing searches and not leaving such a large number of results. The bookmarking tool Delicious also acts as an advantage for researching. It helps you stay organized with all of the useful information you find during the research process. I have learned questions that also help me analyze web pages and their credibility.

    2. In the future I will change up the types of search engines I will use. I know now that other search engines help narrow your research rather than just using Google. I learned new ways to enter in my terms to find the results I want. I will use nesting and Boolean Operators to narrow or broaden my searches in the future. I learned new ways to bookmark web sites that will also help me in my organization.

  18. 1. Some of the advantages of the new techiniques, such as the boolean mathod, have really made a differnece in the results that I get in search engines. I also found out about a new search engine, gigga blast. Its really helpful to know about other search engines, because like many students, I only used google. A dissadvanage about this is that you need to know exactly what you're searching for.

2.This unit will change the way that I research on the web because there was plenty of useful tactics that I will now use.

  19. 1. The advantages you get from Delicious is a safe and reliable saving tool. I actually used it a couple times to save some work and it did it's job perfectly fine. I don't think there are any disadvantages to this web tool.
    2. I think I will use this web tool later in college. Perhaps when I really need to save something important.

  20. 1. so far i have been able to learn something new. i would have never guessed that there was an equation for the few sentences that i typed into a search engine, and never in a million years would i have dreamed of a sight as useful to others as DELICIOUS. now if i ever need to use it, the knowledge of it is there at my disposal.

    2. there are virtually no disadvantages that i can bring out of what we have been shown till this date. although for what its worth, i will not be using delicious, for I can manage just fine by simply saving to my E-mails. But even so, i strongly encourage others to use it. DELICIOUS is a brilliant site

  21. 1. I have learned that by using Boolean Operators, I can refine my searches and provide myself with many more relevant results for my search. I have also discovered that different search engines provide you with different results in a different order, so the sites on the top of one engine may not be the top sites on another, so by using several different search engines I can widen range of results when looking into a topic.

    2. This unit has opened my eyes to the differences between the many different search engines. There is such a wide variety of results that one can get just from using the different engines. That just blows my mind, I thought that search engines were all the same for the most part. I also think that later on in my life I may need the Delicious service that was discussed, and I am glad that I was introduced to it so that when that time comes I will know what to do.

  22. 1. Some advantages that I have discovered are the usage of the Boolean operators and the choices of search engines. I also discovered that the Boolean operators had to be used in upper case. It helps eliminate irrelevant results by using "AND", "OR", or "NOT" in the search terms. The variety of search engines provides many results that Some disadvantages may be rearranging your search terms to get more relevant results, which it time consuming and whether your results are credible and authoritative.

    2. I have learned that are many methods for researching a general topic after this unit. Before this unit, I did not really pay attention to the search terms I was using to for my research. In the future, I will use the Boolean operators for my research. It will help me retrieve more accurate results.

    ReplyDelete
  23. 1. a few advantages discovered was that one or more boolean operators could possibly help in refining a search, but at the same time the results could bring up a site that could not be credible at all

    2. it has changed the way i use search engins by how i would phrase it search from the way i would normaly phrase things. i also now check on the credibly of the sites i enter to make sure i am not getting the wrong information.

    ReplyDelete
  24. 1. Some advantages that I have discovered are that the Boolean operators can really help emphasize the search desired more. There is however the right way to use the Boolean operators, one must insert the "AND" "OR" or "NOT" capitalized otherwise the results will be less accurate and less reliable. Also another advantage that I have discovered is that one should not rely on just one search engine but expand onto others to have more information on the topic being searched.

    2. This unit changed the way I interact with search engines in the future by having me be more aware of the correct ways of researching a desired topic. Also now I am more aware on how to check if the site is credible

  25. All good discoveries! Just keep these new concepts in mind as we move forward. You'll use them again.

As for delicious, my goal was to make sure that you knew it was available to you in case you ever wanted it. I use it constantly, but I probably have close to 300 sites "tagged" now, as I am continually searching for something in all sorts of places--the catalog, databases, the Web, open access journals, etc.

For those of you wondering why you are showing up as "liby 1210..." or "night" or whatever, it depends how you set up your blog in the first place. You put that name on it somewhere in the set-up process, so that's how it appears. I've noticed that sometimes, that happens to me because I happen to be logged into this master blog and have forgotten to sign out and sign in as myself (I have other blogs). It does help if you at least add your first name to the end of your post, so I can tell one liby 1210 from another!

  26. Research Log Entry – 4 points

Think about a topic you would like to explore in relation to your cluster. You may also combine it with your chosen major, if you have one. If you have not yet declared a major, you can focus solely on your cluster. Think about what Earth Crisis might mean. Think of various “angles” you might follow.
Using the “Sizing Your Topic” worksheet, choose a topic to “size.” Be sure it’s not too broad and not too narrow. “Size” your topic with a broader topic, then an even broader topic. Next, “size” you topic with a narrower topic, then an even narrower topic.
Write a research log entry to state the following and describe your thought process for reaching your final topics.

    1) Your topic string

    a. business

    b. management

    c. degree in business

    d. managing a business

    e. business management degree

    2) Think of two questions that you could ask about your topic

    a. what are the major responsibilities of a business administrator?

    b. what qualifications are there to become a business administrator?
